Welcome to my blog! I set up this blog in October 2012 before travelling to Zanzibar, East Africa. Initially, my blog was a means of keeping in touch with family and friends, and to share my experiences of travelling in East Africa. Since an early age I have been keenly interested in foreign cultures, countries and continents. At the age of 10 I learnt all the capital cities in Latin America (some of which I am sorry to say I have forgotten…) and read about ancient Indian cultures in the continent. I still have not made it to Machu Picchu, Peru, but I am going there… Someday.
I travelled approximately 5000km singlehandedly over a period of six months in East Africa, October 2012 – April 2013. The means of transportation were boat x 3, one flight, but mainly bus. And plenty of long distance journeys. So, yes, it is possible for a single white female to travel in Africa without getting into too much trouble…. I have not felt threatened, at risk and I did not get attacked. I didn’t even have anything stolen while staying in a backpackers’ lodge. Since arriving in Norway, many people have seemed positively surprised that nothing “bad” happened. However, I think that the media focus on “news” from Africa casts a highly negative focus on the continent as it fails to draw attention to positive aspects of African societies. For instance, regarding how people live or the norm of relating to one another. The norm is mutual respect. And even strangers greet each other. People are not so different from you and I. In fact, we are more alike than we are different.
In 2006-07 I travelled and volunteered in Southern Africa (South Africa, Botswana and Namibia), and ever since I have dreamt of going off the beaten track to really experience Africa. Because Southern Africa is not like Eastern Africa, or West Africa. Nor the North of Africa. A colleague asked me today whether I am an “Afrofile”. That’s an expressive word for my passion and interest for Africa. Its beauty and diversity, the friendliness and warmth of people, its diversity and energy of people is astonishing and mind-blowing.
Other interests of mine, are literature and music, outdoor activities, creative arts, photography, cooking, and Latin dancing. And by the way, psychology! – cognitive therapy, in particular. 🙂
